Tools and resources for REDCap, Qualtrics, and RexDB-based applications

As Electronic Data Capture (EDC) tools have proliferated, so has the number of incompatible formats for configuring EDC instruments. The lack of interoperability among EDC tools makes research slower and costlier than necessary. Commonly used research instruments and forms are repeatedly configured (and reconfigured) by many different researchers in many incompatible EDC formats—a tremendous waste of human and financial resources.

With funding from the NIH, informatics experts at Prometheus Research authored a freely-available, universal standard and set of conversion tools for the exchange, reuse, and storage of EDC metadata configuration across several popular EDC platforms: REDCap, Qualtrics, and RexED, called RIOS (Research Instrument Open Standard)

Key Information

As Electronic Data Capture (EDC) tools have proliferated, so has the number of incompatible formats for configuring EDC instruments.

The lack of interoperability among EDC tools makes research slower and costlier than necessary. Commonly used research instruments and forms are repeatedly configured (and reconfigured) by many different researchers in many incompatible EDC formats—a tremendous waste of human and financial resources.

RIOS was developed to address these issues and more
