Tools and resources for REDCap, Qualtrics, and RexDB-based applications
As Electronic Data Capture (EDC) tools have proliferated, so has the number of incompatible formats for configuring EDC instruments. The lack of interoperability among EDC tools makes research slower and costlier than necessary. Commonly used research instruments and forms are repeatedly configured (and reconfigured) by many different researchers in many incompatible EDC formats—a tremendous waste of human and financial resources.
With funding from the NIH, informatics experts at Prometheus Research authored a freely-available, universal standard and set of conversion tools for the exchange, reuse, and storage of EDC metadata configuration across several popular EDC platforms: REDCap, Qualtrics, and RexED, called RIOS (Research Instrument Open Standard)
Challenges of sharing, reusing, and accessing platform-agnostic EDC form configuration
Overview of the RIOS metadata definition standard and where to access additional resources on RIOS
Real world example of RIOS in a multi-site Quality Improvement Initiative
Future road map, including plans to integrate RIOS with the Center for Open Science's (COS) Open Science Framework
